Buying a horse in spain

There are many considerations to be made, when you are on the Quest for a Spanish horse in Spain.

First of all, be aware of the fact that the Internet is not as widely used in Spain, as it is in many other countries, so probably, if you only relay on an Internet search, you will be missing around 70% of the horses available.

You may want to consider, that there are, in fact, so many horses in Spain, that if you do not have your dream very clear in your mind, you may lose track of what you are really looking for.

Of course, we are not telling you not to keep your mind open to suggestions or to close your eyes to new approaches but, go back to your original idea from time to time, and make comparisons .

We always recommend to not focus your search only in breeders : sometimes, a trainer can offer a horse with more versatility and a proven athlete . More often than not, you can find horses of the same breeder you were focused on, with proven capabilities and even at better prices.

Select your broker carefully : a broker who can speak your language is an asset, but speaking languages only, does not imply that this broker is well sourced, well connected, well informed or even trustworthy . You may have heard otherwise, but some Spanish people can even speak languages !

Some areas of Spain, are definitely more expensive than others. Emblematic horse places are known for their inflated horse prices, the north is much more expensive than the South and that applies also around Capitals and very big cities.

Beware of extraordinary, beautiful pictures and videos: if a horse looks too much as a fairy tale, probably he is… ask for videos in normal motion : slow motion can cover up many things.

When you come over to Spain to choose your horse, we recommend to have a plan, to have a schedule and to, if possible, have already a documented list of horses for viewing.

If you hear that certain areas of Spain, are more probable to have Piroplasmosis than others, do not believe it : piroplasmosis is related to how a horse is raised, not where.

Before you fall in love with a horse, please have the piroplasmosis test results (if it applies to your country) . Having taken a  decision in your heart and receiving a disappointing test result, leaves you emotionally stranded at square one.

Be wary of  voluminous web pages with huge amount of information… sometimes they try to make you believe that they are up to higher motives and not really to sell you anything (for which you have to be grateful, of course) . Your scouts should be people with not too much time for computers and using their time to get to know as many horses as possible.
